Môn FM - Community Radio
Broadcasting to the Isle of Anglesey - on air and online.
Ofcom License awarded to MonFM
On 5 April 2012 Ofcom awarded eleven new community radio licenses including MonFM's.
We are, of course, enormously pleased to finally hear that we have been awarded a license and eagerly await the confirmation letter; particularly so we can find out on what frequency we will be broadcasting.
We must also take the opportunity to thank all of the people and organisations who have given us so much support and hard work enabling us to get this far - heartfelt thanks to all of you.
There is still some work to be done however: we are now into a period of further fund raising to enable the purchase of transmitters and other equipment, plus of course the station will need some funds to run on a day to day basis. We will be organising audio links to the transmitter site and re-working the studio from it's current, temporary layout, to include a second (backup) studio, production / interview room and separate office & reception area.
Much of this work is already being planned so if you, or someone you know, may be able to offer us a little help with any aspects of developing the station please get in contact with us.
We're back!Whew it's been a busy time here at MonFM. Unfortunately we've had a bit of a bottleneck updating the web site so apologies to all. I hope with our new streamlined process (thanks to Valmai) we'll be keeping the site much more up to date in future. Catching up... The RSL in March went off really well. Simon trained over thirty volunteers with help from Alwyn and others (thank you all) many of whom presented shows during the week. We received lots of feedback from you dear listeners, some constructive criticism, but the comment we heard most was how nice it was to hear people on the radio "talking the way we do". Since March we have continued to broadcast on the Internet - you can find the player on our home page. Whilst it has been a challenge to fill the schedule on weekdays we are establishing a regular listener base evenings and weekends. And then we heard some great news (see next item)... MonFM to go live on 1st MarchWe have just had confirmation that MonFM will be live on air for a week from 1pm on 1st March 2012 ! This is a limited license service which allows us to transmit from Llangefni using limited power for one week only. This gives us the opportunity to show that we can operate a community radio station and also people local to Llangefni to listen in to our first schedule of programmes. We will be broadcasting on 87.9MHz FM and simultaneously on-line. Studio equipment purchasedWe are really pleased to have agreed the purchase of a complete broadcast studio from another community radio station - Tudno FM in Llandudno. This equipment is now surplus to requirements in Llandudno and will help us immensely when we can start broadcasting. Over the next few weeks our technical team will clean, install and configure this equipment in the studio ready for training during February and our first broadcast in March. Many thanks Tudno! Licence Application UpdateLICENCE APPLICATION UPDATEOOur licence application was submitted - after some last minute tweaking - on time back in July. Whilst 3 licences have already been granted to very well established projects, OFCOM have stated that MônFM may well have to wait until March 2012 for a decision on our application; hopefully we will hear sometime sooner that that in the New Year. In the meantime MônFM has committed to running a short Restricted Service Licence (RSL) for one week over the beginning of March 2012 to coincide with St David’s Day. The purpose or this RSL will be to demonstrate our capability to stand up to our commitments to the people of Anglesey and to OFCOM regulations. We will run another, 28 day, RSL later in 2012. Prior to the first RSL, we intend to “go-live” with a streaming Internet service from MônFM and this will follow an intense period of training for our volunteers who will be vital to providing the service. Please look out for announcements very soon regarding volunteering recruiting and training programmes. FUNDRAISINGThe MônFM Steering Group has now divided up the mountainous task list in preparation for the RSLs (see above) and we are now actively seeking funding to help run the project for the people of Anglesey. We're LiveAt 1.00 pm this afternoon MonFM went live on the air 87.9fm. The station was launched by our chairman Vaughan Evans co-hosted by Terry Phipps with guests Ieuan Wyn Jones, The Moniars and The Llangefni Carnival Girls. We also featured opening statements from Albert Owen and Gerallt Llewelyn Jones. We will be on the air for one week only this time but hope to be permanently on the air later this year when Ofcom award us a full time community radio license. If you are in or around Llangefni this week then listen out for an interesting mix of Welsh and English shows and music, all presented by our volunteers.
