Over 14,000 young people from Anglesey have registered to take part in this year's Urdd National Eisteddfod

Organisers confirmed on Saturday they had received 118,089 entries for competitions - the largest total on record for an Eisteddfod held in North Wales.

Europe's biggest youth festival has been extended to seven days for the first time to meet growing demand for more competitions.

The Eisteddfod's executive committee also thanked supporters and fundraisers after reaching their target of £380,000 with a week to spare.

Commtitee chair Manon Wyn Williams said: "I would like to thank the island’s residents who have come together over the past two and a half years to prepare for the Eisteddfod."

"We have been eagerly looking forward to this week, and it is a special experience to see the culmination of all the hard work and, at last, to extend a warm welcome to everyone to Ynys Môn."

Apart from the main format changes, the Maes also includes new dedicated areas including a 'Pabell Piws' and an improved 'Garddorfa' for quiet and rest, along with an Adran area for primary school children, the Aelwyd corner for young people and a dedicated teachers' room.

Former Wales international George North, who recently retired from professional rugby, was the first of the Presidents of the Day.
