A 31 year-old man has admitted driving a stolen taxi on the wrong side of the A55 on Anglesey.

Darragh O'Grady also struck a cyclist and damaged several parked vehicles in the London Road area of Holyhead after he stole a vehicle from a taxi firm on Monday evening.

O'Grady, of no fixed abode but originally from Ireland, pleaded guilty to several charges including causing serious injury by dangerous driving and aggravated taking of a vehicle.

He is also accused of theft and fraud by false representation.

Caernarfon magistrates heard the cyclist was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital after he suffered several injuries.

The stolen vehicle was taken from Tacsi Zoe, based outside the Travelodge hotel on Kingsland Road.

After leaving Holyhead, it travelled eastbound on the westbound carriageway of the A55, which was closed temporarily while police used a stinger to bring the vehicle to a halt.

O'Grady also admitted theft and fraud by misrepresentation after he spent over £200 on a phone and bank card he obtained while on a ferry crossing from Ireland.

A lawyer representing O'Grady said his client was taking medication for schizophrenia and had no memory of what happened on Anglesey and only a scarce memory of the ferry crossing.

Magistrates told O'Grady he would face a 'substanital' jail sentence when he next appears in court on Friday 18th September.

Following the hearing, North Wales Police said he was yet to formally enter pleas on the charges of aggravated vehicle taking, theft from a person and fraud by false representation.

Earlier, the force said there was currently no evidence to suggest the incidents were filmed to be uploaded on social media but an investigation is continuing.

A spokesperson for NWP said: "We would remind the public that legal proceedings remain active and therefore we urge people not to speculate on the details of the incident or the motivations behind it."

O'Grady was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
