The Welsh Government is facing legal action after plans for a major solar energy farm were given the go ahead.

Anglesey Council said it was "disappointed and frustrated" after energy secretary Rebecca Evans approved the Alaw Môn development, despite opposition from the public and the local authority.

Developers Enso Energy are set to install solar panels across 268 hectares of agricultural land between Llantrisant and Llanerchymedd.

Approval was finally granted in August, after the Welsh Government deferred its decision until it received more information on Enso's propsoals.

On Thursday, the council executive voted in favour of proceeding with a legal challenge, after councillors agreed to investigate 'every possible option'.

Council leader Gary Pritchard said the Welsh Government's decision was "contrary to its own policies on the use of best and most versatile agricultural land."

He added: "The proposed development has caused a great deal of worry in our communities and concerns about food safety in the future."

"The council has made its opposition to a number of key aspects of this application from the outset, and I'm pleased that concerns raised will now lend themselves to support this legal challenge."

The solar farm would take a year to build and be in use for 40 years before being decommissioned.

Cllr Aled Morris Jones, leader of the Angelsey Independents group, said: "We cannot afford to lose valuable agricultural land. This project is akin to drowning an area just like Tryweryn, in this case not with water but with solar panels."

Cllr Ieuan Williams, leader of the independent group, added: "I'm disappointed with the minister and the inspectorate and I think we should do everything possible to overturn this decision made in Cardiff."

The Welsh Government said it did not comment on any potential legal challenges, but in August, Rebecca Evans said the benefits of the Alaw Môn scheme "outweigh any harmful effects".

Three Labour councillors abstained from last week's vote on the principle of launching a legal challenge, while one independent councillor voted against.
