A new outdoor events space will be built near the Storiel museum in Bangor.

Earlier this week, the Welsh Government announced £654,000 would go towards public realm improvements in the city centre.

Cyngor Gwynedd says the money will be used to transform the public spaces around the Storiel centre, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

It will include a new dedicated outdoor space for events, performances and community activities, includng ampitheatre-style seating, lighting and upgraded outdoor café seating.

The funding was confirmed during local government minister Sian Gwenllian's visit to the city on Tuesday, where she announced the launch of a new taskforce aiming to revive Welsh town centres.

Council leader Nia Jeffreys said: "This is great news for Bangor, for local people and for visitors to the city. We are delighted with the announcement and welcome the £654,000 investment."

"We were very pleased to welcome the minister to Bangor and to talk her through the exciting plans for the outside space."

The Connecting Storiel project is part of wider plans to create a stronger "cultural corridor" in Bangor, linking Storiel with the Pontio centre, the city's cathedral and library, with work expected to be completed by next spring".

As well as Welsh Government funding from the Transforming Towns programme, support has also been secured from the UK Government's Pride in Place and Shared Prosperity funds.

Cllr Medwyn Hughes, cabinet member for the economy, added: "Bangor has some excellent facilities and the Connecting Storiel project will strengthen the links between them by create a high-quality outdoor space that supports events, culture and community activity."

"This investment is another important step in the regeneration of Bangor city centre, and we look forward to seeing the project progress over the coming months."
