The Welsh Government is rolling out its offer of funded childcare for two-year olds to Anglesey.

From this week, all parents and carers of two year-olds can apply for 12-and-a-half hours a week of childcare, regardless of whether they live on the island.

The new universal provision, which is being rolled out across Wales' 22 local authorities, will be launched at the beginning of November by Anglesey Council.

The Deputy First Minister said the Welsh Government was "accelerating" its commitments to families.

Sioned Williams added: "Childcare costs in Wales are the highest in the UK and I am determined to help families all over Wales, while also supporting children's development."

"We will continue to work closely with local authorities across Wales to roll this out everywhere. This is spending with purpose, with every pound working harder for Wales."

Anglesey Council says the expansion marks a significant milestone in the phased rollout, which is expected to be completed by the end of next March.

It will also support local childcare providers in coping with increasing demand, while seeking to strengthen the long-term sustainability of the sector.

Ministers are planning to extend support for two year-olds from 12 to 20 hours a week - before the offer is further extended to three and four-year olds, and eventually, to toddlers aged between nine months and two years.

Cllr Dyfed Jones, who holds the children's portfolio at Anglesey Council, said: "This is a significant step forward for families across the island and supports the vision set out in the Council Plan 2023-2028 of creating an Anglesey that is healthy and prosperous, where people can thrive."
