A former village primary school looks set to get a new lease of life as a charity and community hub.

Ysgol Cwm-y-Glo was closed in August 2019 after its pupil numbers slumped from 17 to zero.

Now, councillors have approved plans to give Menter Fachwen a long-term lease on the former building.

Menter Fachwen, which specialises in providing education and training for people with learning disabilities, is hoping to develop the site and create new community facilities in response to changing needs.

Cllr Berwyn Parry Jones, chair of Menter Fachwen, said: "Taking on Ysgol Cwm y Glo provides an exciting opportunity to build on our work and develop new day opportunities and work-based opportunities for people with learning disabilities."

"We also recognise how important the school has been to the community in Cwm y Glo for generations. We are really pleased to have the opportunity to give the building a new purpose, and we want its future to remain firmly rooted in the local community."

Plans for the former school include a new community hall and coffee shop, a circular economy hub, a sensory and therapy room, a local history space and a community garden including accessible play facilities.

Cyngor Gwynedd says it will also provide space for local groups and services as well as more vocational training and development opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.

Cllr Paul Rowlinson, cabinet member for property, added: "Menter Fachwen’s plans for the former school offer a great opportunity to create long-term benefits for the local community, and I am very pleased that the council is able to play a part by offering them a long-term lease for a nominal sum."
