Anglesey Council is urging residents and visitors to support Menai Bridge traders following the partial reopening of the nearby suspension bridge.

Nearly a week after the bridge was temporarily closed at the short notice, it was reopened at 7am on Friday to cars, motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge will remain closed to traffic overnight while essential work is carried out on replacing bolts on the beams - along with other repairs which are not due to be completed until next year.

Council chiefs say the town of Menai Bridge has again experienced a difficult period amid criticism over the abrupt closure of the bridge for the second time in three years.

But they add the town remains "very much open" and that every pound spent there will help keep Menai Bridge "vibrant, resilient and full of character".

Council leader Gary Pritchard said: "Menai Bridge has endured a tough time with so much uncertainty in respect of the bridge and disruption to trade. The town needs our support and the businesses there are, of course, open."

"We need to get behind the local businesses. It would be great to see the Anglesey community coming together to support them too."

"If you're out and about this weekend, why not visit Menai Bridge high street for a coffee, lunch or your shopping? Small choices like these can help make a big difference to local jobs and livelihoods."

A spokesperson for Anglesey Council urged visitiors to "plan ahead, allow a little extra time and follow on-street signage" as traffic may be busier at peak commuting times.

Ynys Môn MS Rhun ap Iorwerth said the bridge's partial reopening was "welcome news", but warned "this situation will still have a significant impact on many local businesses, particularly those that depend on evening trade."

Before the announcement on Thursday, Ynys MônMP Llinos Medi said that "several questions remained unanswered about the oversight and inspections" which led to its closure and "five days of major disruption" for businesses in Menai Bridge and surrounding villages.

Weight restrictions remain in place on the bridge, including larger vehicles and vehicles towing caravans and trailers. A one-way system is also in place, serving traffic leaving Anglesey from 7am-1pm and traffic returning to the island from 1-7pm.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "We are working as quickly as possible to remove the 3-tonne limit and will provide an update on an estimated timescale when further information is available."

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the local community and thank everyone for their continued patience and co-operation as we work to resolve this urgent matter."
