Work has begun on redeveloping the site of a former chemical works as part of the Anglesey Freeport.

Around 140 full-time jobs are set to be created at the 'freeport gateway' at the former Eastman (Peboc) site on the outskirts of Llangefni.

60 jobs were lost when the chemical works were cloed in 2008, but Anglesey Council says the eight-acre site - one of the most prominent brownfield areas of the town - remains a strategic location for economic growth.

In February, outline planning permission was granted to build seven modern business units as part of the £19.1 million project.

Council leader Gary Prtichard said: "By accessing seed capital funding and with the support of our partners at Ambition North Wales via the North Wales Growth Deal, we are taking another important step towards realising this major economic project."

"For many years, much of the old Peboc site remained unused. We now have an opportunity to transform it into a place that can support new businesses, quality jobs and investment."

"Working alongside our partners through the Anglesey Freeport and Ambition North Wales, we are laying the foundations for a development that can deliver long-term economic benefits for Llangefni, Ynys Môn and the wider region."

Work is now taking place on clearing and enabling the Peboc site to prepare for future development, which will also see a new access route being built through the Tregarnedd industrial estate.

It will become one of six tax and custom sites as part of the freeport, which includes the former Octel bromine works in Amlwch and the former Shell oil depot in Rhosgoch, along with a 'prosperity parc' in Holyhead that takes in the former Anglesey Aluminium works.

The Welsh Government is providing funding up to 2030 to help the sites prepare for private sector investment.

Christian Branch, head of economic development at Anglesey Council, said: "Securing ownership of the siteas a major milestone following many years of work by the council and its partners."

"We can now begin preparing the site for redevelopment, addressing long-standing issues while creating opportunities for future growth, investment and employment. This marks a significant step forward in our vision to bring this important site back into productive use."

The work is being supported through seed capital funding and investment from Ambition North Wales through the North Wales Growth Deal with Read Construction appointed as contractors.
