The fourth annual Holy Island Heritage Fair takes place during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The free, family-friendly event will include woodland skills, medieval re-enactments, archaeology activities and traditional rural crafts as part of a day-long celebration of Ynys Cybi.

This year's fair also marks the culmination of the Holy Island Landscape Partnership, which has been working with local communities since 2021 on a range of projects aimed at protecting and sharing the area's unique heritage.

Although the Lottery-funded partnership has now ended, many of its most successful schemes are being carried forward through the work of local organisations, community groups and Anglesey Council services.

One of the 19 projects, which was aimed at preserving and promoting dry-stone walling skills, has led to the council offering training for school pupils to help keep an increasingly rare rural craft alive.

One example is the Partnership's 'Conserving Our Traditional Boundaries' project, which helped preserve and promote dry-stone walling skills. Building on this work, the Council's Countryside Service will continue to offer training opportunities for local school pupils in this increasingly rare rural craft.

Paul Edwards, community project officer for the Holy Island Landscape Partnership, said: "The partnership's vision was to raise awareness of the fascinating and unique history, landscape and nature of Holy Island by working closely with local communities, schools and visitors."

"Through promoting a better understanding of the area's heritage, the project helped foster a stronger sense of place and encouraged the protection and celebration of Holy Island's special landscapes for future generations."

The heritage fair, being held at the Holyhead Breakwater Country Park on Saturday 29th August, will also include demonstrations on such skills as coracle building, clay modelling and scything as well as more familiar pursuits including rowing and archery.

Cllr Alun Roberts, who holds the leisure and tourism portfolio at Anglesey Council, added: "The event not only provides a fantastic day out for residents and visitors but also highlights the lasting impact of the Holy Island Landscape Partnership and the importance of preserving and celebrating our natural and cultural heritage."

The heritage fair takes place from 10am-4pm - entry is free although some activities require advance booking via the Anglesey Council website.  Pay-and-display parking will be available at the Country Park, with free overflow parking in the field adjacent to Breakwater Road.
