Holyhead: storm-hit port terminal closes again

Holyhead Port has closed one of its terminals for the second time in less than a year due to maintenance work.

Terminal 5 remained shut for eight months between December 2024 and July this year after it suffered damage during Storm Darragh.

The Holyhead Port Authority has confirmed planned maintenance is now taking place for eight weeks until November, with Stena Line and Irish Ferries sharing Terminal 5 for the time being.

A spokesperson for the port, which is run by Stena Line, said: "This work has been held until September to effectively manage the high volume of traffic during the summer season. During this period ferry operators will share Terminal 5 berth and operate a full timetable."

They added: "Work must be undertaken from the sea and weather dependent; therefore, September is the optimal time for this maintenance and improvement work, minimising the risk of adverse weather conditions."

"Stena Line Ports investment in maintenance and improvements works is to improve the resilience and strengthen Holyhead Port as part of the key trading corridor connecting Ireland and the UK."

Both Stena Line and Irish Ferries will maintain a full schedule, although there will be some timetable changes while they both share Terminal 5.

Similar arrangements were in place from January until July, when terminal 3 remained closed while repairs to storm damage continued.

Terminal 5 finally reopened on 18th July, following two further delays.

Earlier that month, the Senedd heard concerns that local businesses had been left "in the dark" about Welsh Government support nearly seven months after the port was closed.
