The pressures of tackling homelessness in Gwynedd is the subject of a new TV documentary series.

'Am Le i Fyw' ('A Place to Live'), which premieres on S4C on Tuesday night, follows both council officers and those looking for help - and a new home - in the county.

The series, produced by Y Felinheli-based independent company Darlun, was filmed over six months and goes behind the scenes at Cyngor Gwynedd's homelessness service.

The first episode follows David (62), who has been living in a flat for four months after a relationship broke down.

Although he is in temporary accommodation, he is considered to be homeless because he has no permanent tenancy - and having also suffered a stroke, he also speaks about the impact on his physical and mental health.

The programme also features the story of 77 year-old Mr Miller, who has been living in a caravan since 2022 with Cyngor Gwynedd officials and local services working to find him a permanent home amid growing concerns about his health.

The series also looks at the housing crisis affecting the spaces available to home those in most need of help, as well as the financial pressures facing local authorities.

Cyngor Gwynedd says its spends around £6 million a year on emergency accommodation, with average costs at approximately £81 a night.

The programme also highlights the impact homelessness can have on families, as viewers follow the team buying Christmas presents for 72 children living in temporary accommodation across Gwynedd.

Colleen Pritchard, who manages the homelessness service, says the despite the challenges, her team believe they can make a difference: "It's not an easy field to work in. But we can make a real difference to people's lives. I'd go as far as to say we change people’s lives and save lives."

'Am Le i Fyw' can be seen on S4C each Tuesday at 9pm and on catch-up via S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer. English-language subtitles are available.
