A 35 year-old man has been arrested following an assault during a league match between Porthmadog and Trearddur Bay FC.

Social media footage showed defender Tom Taylor allegedly elbowing Porthmadog winger Danny Brookwell in the face just before a penalty was taken in their Ardal North West fixture at Y Traeth on Saturday.

No red cards were issued by referee Richard Gwyn Edwards during the game, which Porthmadog won 3-2.

Following an emergency committee meeting on Sunday, a Trearddur Bay FC spokesperson confirmed that Taylor, who was initially suspended from the club after the incident, had now been released with immediate effect.

They added: "Trearddur Bay Football Club does not condone violence in any form and acknowledges that the incident should not have occurred."

"The club offers its sincere apologies to the opposition player involved, CPD Porthmadog, match officials, supporters, and the wider football community."

"The club will fully cooperate with any external investigations or disciplinary processes and will make no further comment at this time while these matters are ongoing."

Porthmadog FC said its major concern was for the welfare and safety of Brookwell, who was treated on the field after suffering concussion and is now believed to be recovering at home.

In a statement on Sunday, a spokesperson added: "The club would like to express it's disappointment that this incident occurred at all and after studying the video evidence have come to the conclusion that if this happened anywhere other than on a football field would amount to common assault."

"The club's intention is to let the appropriate authorities deal with the matter and trust that the right steps will be taken and that we don't see such a horrific scene again."

North Wales Police has confirmed a 35 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in police custody.

A spokesperson said: "Officers have been making enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident...enquiries are ongoing and we would ask members of the public not to speculate whilst the investigation continues."

They appealed for anyone with information regarding the incident to contact North Wales Police on 101, quoting reference no. 26000046180.

A spokesperson for the Ardal Leagues, the third tier of domestic Welsh football, said: "All Ardal Northern games are under the jurisdiction of the FAW who been made aware of the incident."
