The Menai Suspension Bridge will partially reopen to cars, motorbikes and pedestrians at 7am on Friday, the Welsh Government has confirmed.

The bridge was closed at short notice on Saturday afternoon to all traffic, less than 24 hours after weight restrictions were introduced.

Plans have now been drawn up for a partial reopening - during daytime hours only - while further work and inspections will take place overnight, after engineers discovered bolts on the beams underneath the bridge in need of replacing.

The bridge wil be open between 7am and 7am seven days a week with a 3-tonne weight limit reintroduced and a single flow of traffic depending on the time of day.

Traffic coming off Anglesey will take priority from 7am-1pm followed by traffic returning to the island from 1pm-7pm.

Cyclists and pedestrians can use the bridge during the overnight closure, although they will use separate footways with cyclists epected to dismount.

Ambulances unable to cross the Britannia Bridge will also be permitted emergency access.

The Welsh Government said during the daytime hours, enforcement will be in place to ensure only vehicles that meet the 3-tonne limit are using the bridge - with failure to comply leading to police prosecution, and potentially, further closures to ensure the safety of everyone crossing.

The reopening plan has been drawn up by local authorities alongside the Welsh Government and UK Highways A55, who are carrying out the work.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "We are working as quickly as possible to remove the 3-tonne limit and will provide an update on an estimated timescale when further information is available."

"We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the local community and thank everyone for their continued patience and co-operation as we work to resolve this urgent matter."

Ynys Môn MP, Llinos Medi, said she was pleased to see the bridge's partial reopening "for the benefit of Menai Bridge businesses and island residents".

The Plaid Cymru MP said: "The partial reopening means reducing the traffic pressures for everyone making the morning journey over the bridge to the mainland and returning to the island in the afternoon. I urge everyone to comply with the rules to ensure the bridge stays open."

She added discussions about the next stage of the reopening were ongoing.
