The first tenants are expected to move into a new housing estate in Newborough next month.

14 new homes are being built at the Llain Ddysg development on the site of the former primary school, which was given the go ahead in 2023.

Anglesey Council says it will mark another significant step in addressing local housing needs.

The new estate contains a mix of two, three and four bedroom houses, along with one-bedroom aparments, which have been built to Welsh Government housing standards and designed to be energy efficient.

The homes will be available for social rent with priority given to people on the waiting list with direct or strong local links.

Ned Michael, head of housing services at Anglesey Council, said: "We are delighted to see progress on Llain Ddysg and to be delivering high-quality, energy-efficient homes for local people in Niwbwrch."

"Developments like this are vital in helping us respond to housing demand on the Island, while also ensuring that our new homes meet modern environmental standards."

"Giving priority to those with a local connection helps strengthen communities and ensures that the benefits of this investment remain within the area."

Llain Ddysg was named by a pupil from nearby Ysgol Santes Dwynwen, with schoolchildren also designing health and safety posters which have been displayed around the construction site to promote safe behaviour.

In turn, council officers visited the school to talk to pupils about the importance of construction site safety

Anglesey Council says the development supports one of the key objectives in its current five-year plan ensuring everyone has the right to call somewhere 'home', while responding to local housing challenges by working alongside the Welsh Government and other partners.

Cllr Carwyn Jones, who holds the housing portfolio, added: "Providing affordable, sustainable homes is one of the council's key priorities."

"Llain Ddysg is a strong example of how we are working with Welsh Government and local partners to meet housing need while reducing our carbon footprint."

"It has been wonderful to see local schoolchildren involved in the project, from learning about site safety to choosing the estate's name. We look forward to welcoming the new tenants and seeing this development become a valued part of the community."
