The names of some of Bangor's children will be part of the fabric of their school for generations to come.

Pupils from Ysgol Ein Harglwyddes in the city had the opportunity to sign the steel beams that will form the frame of their new school, which is currently under construction.

Pupils from Year 6 and their teachers joined Bishop Peter M. Brignall from the Catholic Diocese of Wrexham, representatives from Cyngor Gwynedd and Read Construction – who have won the contract to build the new school – for the brief ceremony.

Some of the school's former headteachers, who contributed towards securing a new school over the years, were also present.

The new school will offer a more suitable setting for the 150 pupils and staff than the current building, which has deteriorated over time. It will also include Early Years provision.

Aimee Jones, headteacher of Ysgol Ein Harglwyddes, said: "The event to sign the steel beams was an exciting opportunity for the children and they enjoyed seeing how their new school building is taking shape."

"We are delighted that the new provision of the highest quality will be available to our pupils and we look forward to making the best use of the new resources."

Last year, it was confirmed that Cyngor Gwynedd had secured £7.7 million to build the new school which will offer Catholic education in Bangor on the former Glanadda site in the city.

Bishop Peter M. Bagnall added: "I am delighted we have reached this milestone of 'signing the steel' in the building of the new school. It is wonderful to see the children's joy, hope and expectation of their new School being a step nearer."

"I am grateful to all concerned for the progress made thus far, especially the contractors for making best use of the opportunities afforded by the recent good weather."

85% of the funding for the construction of the new school is coming from the Welsh Government's Sustainable Learning Communities Programme and 15% from the Catholic Diocese of Wrexham.
