S4C has announced it will screen a three-part drama series about padeophile Neil Foden next year.

The former Ysgol Friars headteacher is serving 17 years in prison for sexually abusing four girls between 2019 and 2023.

Last year, an independent review condemned authorites for missing 52 opportunities to stop Foden and 'major weaknesses' in safeguarding at the Bangor school and at Cyngor Gwynedd.

S4C says the new drama - with the working title of 'Y Pennaeth' ('The Headteacher') - has been developed over the last 18 months and is based on the 'Our Bravery Brought Justice' report as well as evidence and notes from the trial at Mold Crown Court.

Actor Mark Lewis Jones will play Foden in the three-part series produced by MOJO Productions, written by Llinos Gerallt and directed by Huw Chiswell.

According to S4C, the drama will recount the events from the point of view of two of Foden's survivors, with the characters and many of the scenes fictionalised to protect the identity of the survivors.

Gwenllian Gravelle, the channel's outgoing drama commissioner, said: "This is an important and shocking story about how one man in a position of trust and power betrayed his status over a period of many years, and asks difficult questions about cultures where one individual is seen as someone who cannot be challenged."

"Developed with great care and sensitivity, the production deals with the subject in a responsible way, focusing on the wider results of the betrayal by a public figure who was entrusted with responsibility and care."

A spokesperson for S4C said MOJO Productions has been in contact with North Wales Police "as a matter of courtesy" during the development phase and both the writer and production company have been working with a journalist acting as a contact point for those affected by Foden's crimes.

They added: "The police have ensured that all survivors involved in the court case are aware of the project, and the production company has offered them access to professional support."
