An inquest has opened into the deaths of two sisters in Eryri.
They were pulled from the water by emergency services but pronounced dead at the scene.
Hajira (29) and Haleema (25), who lived in the Rotherham area, had travelled to Eryri with a group of friends from Chester University, where they were studying degress in international business.
The hearing in Caernarfon was adjourned while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
North Wales Police were called to the scene at 9.30pm where one of the women had already been pulled from the water.
Mountain rescue teams from Llanberis and Aberglaslyn also attended, along with the Wales Air Ambulance and the Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon but the pair were pronounced dead at just before 11pm.
Sarah Riley, assistant coroner for North West Wales, said she offered her "sincere condolences to their family, friends and all who knew and loved them".
The vice chancellor of the University of Chester said the community was "in mourning for the tragic loss of" the sisters.
Professor Eunice Simmons added: "They touched the lives of many here at Chester – their friends, the cohort on their course and the staff who taught them – and they will be deeply missed."
