Hundreds of Anglesey children are being given water safety advice as part of an award-winning initative.

23 primary schools from across the island are taking part in three weeks of activities being held at Trearddur Bay and Rhosneigr over the next three weeks.

The sessions are being delivered by Anglesey Council's leisure service Môn Actif in partnership with Swim Wales, Swim Safe UK and the RNLI.

It coincides with Drowning Prevention Week - one of the biggest water safety campaigns in the UK - which is timed ahead of the summer holidays as children spend more time outdoors.

Barry Edwards, sports development manager at Môn Actif, said: "We're proud to build on the success of past Swim Safe events to continue to educate young people on Anglesey about the importance of water safety."

"We're grateful to the local schools for their ongoing support, and it's fantastic to see so many schools from across the Island joining us in these fun safety sessions."

Pupils from Ysgol Bodorgan and Ysgol Llandegfan were the first to take part in the sessions on Monday, which are designed to teach essential safety skils through fun and engaging activities.

500 local children took part last year with staff from Môn Actif going onto win a Swim Wales award.

Cllr Neville Evans, who holds the leisure portfolio at Anglesey Council, said: "Living on an island, its vitally important to teach children how to swim safely and what to do if they find themselves in trouble in the water."

"Once again, I am delighted to see the Swim Safe sessions take place here on Ynys Môn, and I thank Môn Actif and our partners for making these sessions both fun and educational for our children."

"These initiatives emphasise our continued commitment to keeping our children and young people safe."

Môn Actif currently delivers school swimming lessons to over 40 primary schools on Anglesey, working to ensure that every Key Stage 2 pupil has the opportunity to learn how to swim and stay safe.
