Anglesey Council leaders have stepped up their calls for a third Menai crossing to be built.

A new report argues the two existing crossings - the Britannia Bridge and the Menai Suspension Bridge - are "no longer fit for modern demands" and that failure to act risks holding back the island's economy.

The council said local communities and residents have been "let down for too long" by unreliable transport links.

The Menai Suspension Bridge, which marked its 200th anniversary this year, has been closed several times during ongoing maintenance work - with restrictions breached by overweight vehicles three times during the recent Urdd National Eisteddfod, causing severe traffic disruption.

The council-commissioned report says repeated closures and a lack of resilience in the current infrastructure is "disrupting residents' daily lives" and "undermining confidence" in North West Wales.

The Welsh Government says it is considering detailed options for a third crossing, including "immediate measures and longer term options" to improve resilience.

Dylan J Williams, chief executive of Anglesey Council, said: "The lack of resilience in this ageing infrastructure is evident. The disruption caused by the increasing number of closures to the bridges is impacting our daily lives."

"They have now become a regular occurrence, as we witnessed during the week of the Urdd National Eisteddfod in May, one of the biggest events in the Welsh calendar, and again just earlier this month."

"Anglesey is at a turning point, but our potential is being constrained by a transport network that simply isn't fit for the 21st century."

"We cannot continue to rely on ageing infrastructure that fails our residents, businesses and visitors. A third crossing is essential — and it must be delivered with urgency."

The report, discussed by Anglesey Council's executive on Tuesday, argues that a third crossing is "the only long-term solution to secure resilience, unlock growth and protect the island's future."

It adds failure to act would put a risk to key projects such as the Anglesey Freeport, the new Gwyndod power station at Wylfa and the future of Holyhead port as well as increasing pressure on communities, public services and the Welsh language.

The council says it will seek also seek an urgent meeting with both the UK and Welsh governments to discuss the way forward and seek assurances about resources and progress.

Council leader Gary Pritchard said: "This is about fairness, opportunity and the future of our communities. For too long, Ynys Môn has had to rely on infrastructure that simply cannot meet modern demands."

"Every closure affects our residents' daily lives, their ability to get to work, access healthcare, attend school and run businesses."

"Without decisive action, we face a real risk of continued economic decline and missed opportunities - particularly at a time when investment through several major economic projects and our wider growth plans could transform the Island."

"A third crossing is not a luxury; it is essential infrastructure. With the right investment and urgency, we can unlock jobs, strengthen our economy and ensure our communities are connected, resilient and able to thrive long into the future."

The council said the report would now be presented to the new Welsh Secretary of State, Stephen Kinnock - who replaced Jo Stevens on Monday - as well as the Welsh Government's enterprise minister Adam Price and deputy transport minister Mark Hooper.

Last month, Mr Hooper told the Senedd: "I recognise the disruption that these closures have caused to communities across Ynys Môn and all those travelling in the north of the country. This has understandably led to deep frustration and increasing anger amongst those affected."

He added: "Looking at the longer term, we will now start looking at detailed options for a third Menai crossing, building on the work already undertaken."

Mr Hooper told MSs he intends to report back to the Senedd early in the Autumn.
