An inquest has heard a couple died from significant trauma after their light plane crashed near Trawsfynydd.

The bodies of Sheetal (55) and Ketan Swali (59) were found by emergency services on Friday afternoon, after their aircraft crashed in a remote location near the village.

The pair, who lived in Leicestershire, had been travelling in a hired Piper PA-28 aircraft from an airfield near Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire.

Air and ground searches were launched after midday when the plane failed to arrive at Caernarfon Airport as scheduled.

North West Wales assistant coroner Sarah Riley told the Caernarfon hearing that the coastguard had alerted police about a possible collision after the aircraft disappeared from the radar

Mr and Mrs Swali were found at 2.15pm and both were pronounced dead at the scene - post-mortem examinations found the provisional cause of death was major impact trauma.

The hearing was adjourned while the Air Accident Investigation Branch continues an investigation into the crash.
