Mynediad am Ddim

Robin Evans, best known as a member of Mynediad am Ddim ('Free Entry'), has died at the age of 72.

Originally from Pencaenewydd, near Pwllheli, he was a founding member of the folk group, who originally formed in 1974 to compete in an inter-college Eisteddfod in Cardiff.

Following their success, they stayed together and went onto record five albums between 1975 and 2010, along with a greatest hits compilation in 1992.

Last year, they completed a nationwide tour across Wales to mark their 50th anniversary.

Robin was also a TV producer for the Caernarfon-based independent production company Ffilmiau'r Nant, where he launched two of S4C's signature series - the youth soap Rownd a Rownd, which is filmed in Menai Bridge, and the football show Sgorio.

In 2008, he became chairman of Rondo Media following Nant's merger with Opus TV.

He was also a journalist, working for the Welsh language weekly newspaper Y Cymro, and later as a sports reporter on the HTV nightly news programme Y Dydd in the 70s and early 80s.

Paying tribute on social media, a spokesperson for Mynediad am Ddim said: "There are no words to convey our sadness after we lost Robin this morning."

"A fundamental, loyal and integral member of Mynediad am Ddim. Robin fought bravely and complained for a long time, but he was determined to complete our recent tour to celebrate the band's half century."

"We can only be grateful that we managed to do that with each other, finishing the journey in Aberystwyth, February 1st, 2025, which is Robin's birthday. And that was our last night."

"Although the gulf that Robin leaves is a huge one, there is so much to remember that will raise a smile when looking back over the years of friendship and fun that resulted from sharing stages throughout Wales and beyond."

"We are thinking especially of LLio and Huw, Heulwen, Emyr, Aled and all their families."

A spokesperson for Llandwrog-based Sain Records, the band's label, said: "Very sad to hear the news this morning about Robin Evans."

"We especially remember his mellow singing voice and his brilliant contribution to the world of popular music in Wales for decades through his absolutely key role in the legendary folk group Mynediad am Ddim. Thank you, Robin. We think of all his family and friends."

Robin, who lived in Caernarfon, was married to Heulwen with two children, Llio and Huw.
