Two jetskiers were rescued after they were stranded late at night off the north west coast of Anglesey.

The RNLI's inshore lifeboat at Holyhead was called out at just after 10pm on Sunday following inital reports that the pair had gone missing between the harbour and Llanfwrog.

The Coastguard managed to make contact with the men by mobile phone, who were later located towards the Porth Swtan (Church Bay) area.

Two white paraflares were used to try and show the pair where the lifeboat was, but shortly afterwards, the exact location of the two jetskis was found.

Both men were said to be safe and well and "extremely relieved", although one was beginning to suffer with a cold.

One of the jetskis had suffered battery failure with the other already starting to tow his companion - which proved to be ineffective and difficult to monitor in the dark.

The four-strong lifeboat crew gave them torches and stayed with the jetskis until they reached Llanfwrog (Sandy Beach), where the pair had left earlier that evening. Due to the conditions and tides, the lifeboat then towed the broken down craft back to shore.

The stranded pair were given advice on carrying suitable equipment, such as distress flares and radios, on future excursions.

Dave Roberts, senior helm at Holyhead RNLI, said: "The two men were wearing suitable buoyancy aids, and had mobile phones – but these don’t always have a good signal out at sea, and batteries can drain quickly."

"They did the correct thing in staying together, and luckily one of the mobile phones had enough charge and signal for HM Coastguard to be able to track their exact location, but a VHF radio would have made a big difference in this instance, as would using distress flares."
