Former Wales international Wayne Hennessey has retired from football at the age of 38.

The Bangor-born goalkeeper, who was brought up in Beaumaris, was one of Wales' most capped players, making 109 appearances for his country.

Most memorably, he was part of the squad that reached the semi finals of Euro 2016 in France and helped Wales end a 64-year wait to qualify for the World Cup in 2022.

At club level, Hennessey came through the youth ranks at Manchester City and Wolves, where he made his professional debut in 2006 and went onto make 152 appearances before moving to Crystal Palace in 2014, playing in 110 matches.

After a brief spell at Burnley, he made the move to Nottingham Forest, where games were few and far between, despite being given a short-term deal by manager Nuno Espirito Santo in January.

Hennessey also represented Wales at youth level before making his professional debut in a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in 2007.

In September 2020, he broke the record of clean sheets for Wales previously held by Neville Southall, before earning his 100th cap in a friendly against the Czech Republic in March 2022.

Hennessey would make just one appearance in Qatar that November, when he was sent off in the closing stages of their 2-0 defeat to Iran, pre-empting their exit at the group stages.

His final international appearance came a year later in his native North Wales, when he kept a clean sheet in a 4-0 win over Gibraltar in Wrexham.

Announcing his retirement, Hennessey said he would "look back with gratitude and forward with optimism" as he takes the next steps on his footballing journey.

He said: "I have amazing memories playing for both club and country. From my early days at Wolves, loans at Stockport and Yeovil, and my time with Crystal Palace, Burnley and Nottingham Forest, each club shaped me both on and off the field."

"Having been born and raised in North Wales it was always my dream to play at the highest level, it was a privilege to play in the Premier League and for my country over 100 times."

"The summer of 2016 was the pinnacle of my career having made the FA Cup Final with Palace and the semi-finals of the Euros with my beloved Wales."

Hennessey added: "It has been an honour to play alongside and against some sensational players and working with some incredible managers, coaches, medical, media and support staff."

“Fans have been the backbone of support throughout my playing days, especially during the many times I suffered from injuries, I was able to draw so much strength from your support."

“The greatest thanks of all go to my family and Kirsty my wife, who have constantly supported me throughout my career, providing love and encouragement through all the ups and downs.”
