Four young sailors based at Y Felinheli have secured top 10 finishes at a world championship.

Jac Bailey and Ben Sinfield were sixth overall at the recent 29er regatta held at Kiel on the Baltic Sea in north Germany.

The pair are now hoping to represent Great Britain in the 29er class at the Youth Sailing World Championships in Portugal this December, before upgrading to the Olympic 49er class.

Jac and Ben said: "Super proud of the result we managed to put down together for our last 29er worlds. Kiel threw everything at us."

"Every day was a different day from windy to light to shifty to wavy, we had it all! We were able to stay consistent throughout the week and able to rely fully on our equipment with no breakages thanks to RYA Cymru Wales supporting us with the best kit!"

Their teammates Ben Greenhalgh and Tom Sinfield also clinched ninth overall in a field of over 270 entries tackling full-on weather conditions.

Before the world championship, Ben Greenhalgh and Tom Sinfield finished fifth overall in the Eurocup fleet at the Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) regatta, which attracted 157 entries, with the pair also finishing third among the men's teams.

Tom said: "At Kiel Week, we sailed really well in the light and are pleased to have managed to get a top five in a challenging week."

"In the worlds, it was a rough start with a yellow flag and a big error on the first day but we kept our heads high and results consistent to manage to climb into the top 10, which we were overall very proud of in a windy week.”

Both pairs, who are members of Clwb Hwylio Y Felinheli, are part of the Welsh national sailing team and recieve equipment support from RYA Cymru Wales, enabling them to compete at the highest level.

They are also among the first to receive new Welsh Sail awards - the equivalent of a 'Welsh cap' - recognising international competitiors.

Sarah McGovern, chief operating officer at RYA Cymru Wales, added: "Having two Welsh 29er boats in the top 10 at the 29er Worlds is absolutely unheard of - a sign of brilliant things to come."
