The First Minister returned to the Urdd National Eisteddfod on Tuesday - this time as the festival's President of the Day.

Just a fortnight ago, Rhun ap Iorwerth took over the top job in Welsh politics as Plaid Cymru formed a minority Welsh Government following the Senedd elections.

On Sunday, Mr ap Iorwerth was also at the Maes in Mona, near Gwalchmai, to see his father Edward Morus Jones being recognised as one of the seven Honorary Presidents at this year's festival.

The First Minister, a former BBC Wales journalist, was also surprised with a 'before they were famous' clip from 1983, when he performed in a Cerdd Dant competition at the Urdd National Eisteddfod in Aberafan, when he was 11 years old.

He said: "I was born in Pontypridd and lived for a period in Meirionnydd, but after moving to Ynys Môn at the age of six, that became my home."

"After marrying Llinos – who is also from Ynys Môn – we raised our three children there, Elen, Siwan and Osian, and we still live there today."

On his own memories as an Urdd member, the Bangor Conwy Môn MS added: "I have very fond memories of time spent at Llangrannog and Glan-llyn, of competing in Eisteddfodau and public speaking competitions, and of attending the Urdd youth club in Menai Bridge every week."

"The list of opportunities the Urdd gave me is a long one, but if I had to choose a favourite memory, I would go back to 1989 and the Urdd Youth Theatre drama course – a week in Llangrannog writing and rehearsing the musical drama Rhyw Ddydd, followed by a week touring theatres across Wales. I made lifelong friends."

"As a child, I competed regularly at Eisteddfod yr Urdd and, whether singing solo or as part of a group or choir, the experience of stepping onto the stage was invaluable in helping me become comfortable appearing in front of an audience and grow in confidence."

"It means a great deal to me to serve as President for the Day. It is a tremendous honour, especially with the Eisteddfod taking place in my local area. I look forward to welcoming everyone to Ynys Môn and I am confident we will enjoy a week to remember."

Tuesday marks the halfway point of this year's festival, which has already seen the daily president role taken up by former Wales rugby international George North, writer and comedian Tudur Owen and singer Elin Fflur.

Football coach Osian Roberts takes over the role on Wednesday, followed by comedieenne Kiri-Pritchard McLean on Thursday, and finally, musical director Mari Pritchard on Friday.
