A55: man arrested after driving wrong way

A man has been arrested after a vehicle was caught travelling on the wrong side of the A55 on Anglesey.

One person was knocked off their bike on London Road in Holyhead - and a number of parked vehicles were damaged - before the vehicle entered the A55 on Monday evening.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The A55 was temporarily closed while police officers, travelling on the correct side of the road, dealt with the incident and ensured the road was safe to reopen.

North Wales Police said there were no collisions as a result of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction, but enquiries are continuing and there are no further details at the moment.

An NWP spokesperson said the forced acknowledged "in light of the recent events that have taken place involving Cleveland Police the feelings that this incident may attract. We would like to offer our condolences to all those effected by those tragic events."

Seven people, involving two police officers, died when a car travelling the wrong way crashed into a patrol car on the A66 near Middlesbrough on Saturday. Twelve people have since been arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

Last weekend, five teenagers died in a similar head-on-crash on the M9 in County Kildare, Republic of Ireland.
