A Caernarfon man has been jailed for a racially-motivated assault on a shopkeeper.
Mark Jones (24) shouted racial slurs at the keeper, before attacking him at a shop on Bridge Street last August.
He pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault and intentional strangulation.
Caernarfon Crown Court heard Jones, of Maesincla Lane, shouted "go back to your own country" and "I'll kill you" at the victim, who asked him to leave.
He was grabbed and strangled before a member of the public intervened. Jones fled the scene before police arrived but he was caught nearby soon afterwards.
Jones was sentenced to two years and four months in prison and placed on a ten-year restraining order against the shopkeeper.
Temporary District Inspector Andy Davies said: “Jones’ behaviour towards a shopkeeper just trying to do his job was appalling and unacceptable."
“This incident was terrifying for the victim and it is fortunate that there were others around to come to his assistance."
“We will robustly deal with incident of hate crime, and I truly hope that Jones reflects on his disgusting behaviour.”
