Work has begun on transforming two historic buildings in Holyhead town centre.

The former Booze Buster store on Stanley Street and the former Davies Hardware shop on Boston Street have been left vacant for many years.

The Townscape Heritage Initiative will see both buildings been turned into two retail units and four flats.

Richard Lennon, the owner of No.1 Stanley Street said: "It's great to see one of the oldest non-religious buildings in Holyhead being renovated and be able to provide two new homes in the heart of the town."

Around £22.5 million of UK Government funding is being spent on the Townscape Transformation Project, which has already seen restoration work on several properties in and around Holyhead town centre.

The heritage initiative is aimed at attracting more visitors and encouraging more private investment into Holyhead town centre.

Anglesey Council says both Stanley Street and Boston Stree remain "very much open", although there may be some disruption for safety and practical reasons.

Council leader Gary Pritchard said: "Having been brought up in Holyhead myself, I appreciate the history and heritage of the townscape and the importance of conserving our historic buildings."

"This project alongside others in Holyhead is a key part of the council's efforts to support Holyhead's regeneration. The work will boost the local economy, provide new homes for locals and have a lasting impact on the town's streetscape."

The Townscape Heritage Initiative is funded through Anglesey Council by the UK Government and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
