The developers of Wylfa's new small nuclear reactor have signed a key agreement with Anglesey Council.

Last November, the UK Government announced the first SMR would be situated at the site of the former nuclear power plant, which is currently being decommissioned.

The collaboration agreement between the council and the public-owned Great British Energy - Nuclear (GBE-N) is aimed at delivering local benefits and ensuring the project is delivered responsibly.

Work is expected to begin on the first units later this year - with Wylfa earmarked to provide capacity for up to eight SMRs, generating power to the National Grid from the mid-2030s.

Dylan J Williams, chief executive of Anglesey Council, said: "As an authority with extensive experience of major energy proposals, we bring considerable technical expertise, local knowledge and an in‑depth understanding of the Island's communities."

"This experience places us in a strong position to influence GBE‑N and its contractors in ways that maximise local and regional benefits, ensure responsible project delivery and protect the Island's unique characteristic, culture and the Welsh language."

"The potential economic, social, cultural and environmental opportunities associated with the proposed SMR programme are significant."

"We're determined to make sure Anglesey is fully equipped to take advantage of these opportunities - whether in new jobs, skills pathways, local supply chain growth, improved infrastructure, or long‑term community investment."

GBE-N is overseeing the development and deployment of new nuclear technology - and the council says it wants to ensure Anglesey remains "at the heart" of talks and decision making at every stage of the project.

But the local authority says it also recognises the SMR scheme brings "risks that must be carefully managed" - and it's hoped the formal agreement will allow both parties to look at how to avoid potential adverse impacts and ensure the development is undertaken responsibly.

Kenny Douglas, DevCo development director for GBE-N said: "In the months since Wylfa was announced as our primary development site, I have seen first-hand the passion there is to maximise the benefits of our project for the people of Anglesey."

"It is our responsibility to deliver on that potential, and GBE-N looks forward to working with the Isle of Anglesey County Council over the years to come."

Anglesey Council says the focus will remain firmly on the residents and communities of North Anglesey, pledging to promote "the critical importance of the proximity principle" with GBE-N and its contractors.

Council leader Gary Pritchard added: "This agreement formalises our commitment to work closely with GBE‑N as they explore the delivery of SMRs at Wylfa."

"Our priority is clear - to secure the best possible outcomes for the people of Anglesey, while ensuring any risks are properly managed and the island's voice is heard throughout the development process."

"We look forward to continuing this constructive partnership and to ensuring that the project brings lasting, positive benefits to Anglesey and its communities."

Last month, GBE-N announced it had appointed specialist consultants WSP and Mott MacDnald to deliver envrionmental services and permitting works for the project as part of a five-year contract worth up to £25 million.
