It's emerged a vehicle caught driving on the wrong side of the A55 was stolen from a taxi firm.

A man was arrested on Monday evening after the vehicle was stopped by police officers, who had temporarily closed the road.

Earlier, a cyclist was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being knocked off their bike on London Road in Holyhead, where several parked vehicles were also damaged.

In a statement on social media, the owner of Holyhead-based Tacsi Zoe confirmed the vehicle had been stolen from her.

She said: "I was personally caught up in this and, like many others, found the whole situation extremely scary and traumatic."

"I want to make it absolutely clear that this was not myself or any of my drivers."

"A huge thank you to all the police officers involved for their quick response and for bringing the situation to a safe conclusion."

North Wales Police said it received a report of a taxi being stolen from the Holyhead area at around 7.30pm.

25 minutes later, the vehicle was safely brought to a stop on the A55 westbound between Rhosneigr and Rhostrehwfa after closing the road.

The driver was arrested for a number of offences involving theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and faiing to provide. He remains in custody.

Detectives said there were no collisions as a result of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction, but their enquiries are continuing and they are urging the public to avoid speculation on social media.

Last night, the force said it acknowledged "the feeling that this incident may attract" in light of the head-on-crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough, where seven people - including two police officers - were killed early on Saturday morning.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Nick Evans of North Wales Police said: "I am very grateful for the support we have received from the public so far and for the positive comments that have been made regarding the actions of our officers, who brought this incident to a safe conclusion."
