Bridge crossbeam repairs to begin

Work to repair crossbeams on the Menai Suspension Bridge will begin later this month.

The Welsh Government says a one-way 'tidal flow' system will be in place for approximately eight days, starting from Thursday 19th February.

Traffic going from Anglesey to the mainland will be able to cross between 7am and 1pm, followed by one-way traffic from the mainland to Anglesey from 1-7pm.

The bridge will remain open both ways overnight, although the 7.5 tonne weight restriction will remain in place.

A Welsh Government spokesperson added: "As part of the revised wider Phase 2 programme, there will only be traffic management for short periods of time to complete key elements."

"Overall, the revised plans have significantly reduced the need for traffic management on the bridge compared to the earlier plans, thereby reducing disruption to residents, commuters and businesses."

"Enforcement of the 7.5‑tonne weight limit remains essential for maintaining safe operation of the bridge while works are underway."

Last October, the bridge was closed entirely to all traffic after engineers found bolts on the crossbeams which needed replacing.

Work on the bridge is expected to continue until spring 2027 at the earliest, thereby missing a pledge to complete the work in time for the bridge's 200th anniversary.
