Clwb Rygbi Caernarfon has retired its number 5 shirt for the rest of the season as a tribute to Jack Davies.

The second row from Llanfairpwll, who also played for RGC, died suddenly earlier this month at the age of 24.

The Cofis postponed their game against Pwllheli last weekend, but they will return to action on Saturday when the two Gwynedd clubs meet at Y Morfa in the first round of the WRU Division One Cup.

A club spokesperson said: "As a tribute to Jack, we will be retiring the first team’s number 5 shirt for the remainder of the season."

"It was a pleasure watching Jack play in the number, and as a team we feel this decision is testament to his memory."

Jack, who was also a teacher at Ysgol David Hughes in Menai Bridge, joined Caernarfon when he was just 12 years old and went onto win 58 games with their junior team before becoming a member of the RGC player pathway.

He returned to both clubs three years ago after studying at Cardiff Met University.

Last year, he helped Caernarfon reach the final of the Division One Cup by scoring in their semi-final win, although he missed their showpiece win at the Principality Stadium due to a serious injury.

Paying tribute, the club said: "Despite this setback, he played a vital role in supporting the team and his smile and positive outlook shone through in the build up to the final, never once being bitter of not actually playing in the final."

"This was the hallmark of a truly beautfiul and generous character."

Caernarfon said this Saturday's cup tie was "for once, not about the result", but about "coming together as the Teulu Cofis standing shoulder to shoulder and remembering one of our own".

They added: "In the meantime, thank you for continuing to show the compassion, unity and support that makes CR Caernarfon more than a rugby team. We look forward to seeing you all at Y Morfa as we come together to remember Jack."

RGC will also be paying their own tribute to Jack when they play Pontypool in their Super Rygbi Cymru fixture at Colwyn Bay's Eirias Park on Saturday.
