Developers behind the Morlais scheme have called on the Welsh Government to continue its support for tidal energy.

Energy Minister, Adam Price, met with Menter Môn executives last Thursday on a visit to the Holyhead-based scheme, which could begin generating clean electricity as soon as next year.

According to the social enterprise, continued support from ministers would "unlock quality jobs, supply-chain growth and greater energy security for Wales".

Mr Price said: "Morlais is a fantastic example of how our natural resources can power economic renewal as well as generate clean energy and ensure communities are central to the renewable energy transition."

"When developed sustainably, tidal energy offers the potential for reliable, predictable power while creating skilled jobs, strengthening Welsh supply chains and retaining more of the value generated here in our communities. We want Wales to be at the forefront of this growing global industry."

Menter Môn Morlais says the development - the largest of its kind in Europe - is already creating opportunities for local businesses and apprentices and expects further economic benefits as it develops.

Talks with the minister focused on the potential of tidal energy to deliver reliable renewable electricity and support climate ambitions as well as strengthening the UK's energy resilience in the long term.

John Idris Jones, chair of Menter Môn Morlais, added: "This visit highlights the growing recognition of tidal energy’s role in delivering clean power while creating skilled jobs and opportunities for local people."

"As a community-led project, Morlais is responding to the need for clean energy while helping to strengthen the local economy and ensure the benefits of are felt here on Ynys Môn."

"Morlais is helping to put Wales and the UK on the map in the global marine energy sector. However, we need continued support to build on this progress so we can realise our full potential."
